The Santa Fe Fiesta takes place every year in the fall in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although the festival ostensibly celebrates the reconquest of Santa Fe by Don Diego de Vargas, it has been criticized as being a celebration of Hispanic colonialism and Catholicism. Alternatively, the festival can be seen as a reclamation of Hispanic identity in the face of Anglo occupation and the transition in the borderlands from a Mexican identity to an American one. While much of the folklore surrounding the event pertains to Spanish rule, some traditions are uniquely New Mexican and influenced by the indigenous community.
